Fiber optic sensor housings are typically made from glass, polymer, or metal materials, chosen for their mechanical strength, chemical resistance, flexibility, and environmental durability.Common Housing Materials1. Glass Fiber Housings Glass fibers are widely used in fiber optic sensors due to their excellent optical transmission and chemical resistance. They are highly resistant to acids, solvents, and high temperatures, making them suitable for harsh industrial environments. However, glass fibers are fragile and prone to breakage under vibration or mechanical stress, which can limit their use in flexible or dynamic applications . 2. Polymer Fiber Housings Polymer optical fibers (POFs) are increasingly used for sensor applications where flexibility and impact resistance are important. Common polymers include PMMA (Poly(methyl methacrylate)), which offers good biocompatibility, electromagnetic resistance, and even biodegradability. POFs are generally larger in diameter than glass fibers and have higher attenuation, making them more suitable for short-distance sensing rather than long-distance data transmission. Their flexibility allows for bent or U-shaped sensor designs, which are difficult to achieve with glass fibers . 3. Metal Protective Sleeves To enhance mechanical durability, fiber optic sensors—especially glass fibers—are often encased in metal sleeves. These housings protect the fiber from mechanical damage, reduce the risk of breakage, and improve resistance to environmental factors such as vibration, shock, and abrasion .Material Selection ConsiderationsEnvironmental Resistance: For high-temperature, chemically aggressive, or electrically noisy environments, glass fibers with metal housings are preferred.Flexibility: Polymer fibers are ideal for applications requiring bending, twisting, or compact installation in tight spaces.Biocompatibility: Polymer housings are suitable for medical or biological applications due to their non-toxic and biocompatible properties.Signal Transmission: Glass fibers provide superior optical performance for precise measurements, while polymer fibers trade some optical efficiency for mechanical flexibility .SummaryThe choice of fiber optic sensor housing material depends on the application requirements.
