A 1-to-2 beam splitter is typically made either as a cube of two glued prisms or as a coated plate/mirror, designed to reflect half the light and transmit the other half.Cube Beam SplittersCube beam splitters are constructed from two right-angle triangular glass prisms that are glued together at their hypotenuse faces using adhesives such as epoxy, polyester, or urethane. The thickness of the adhesive layer is carefully controlled so that, for a specific wavelength, 50% of the incident light is reflected at 90° and 50% is transmitted straight through. This effect is achieved through frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) or by applying a reflective coating on the hypotenuse surface of one prism before assembly. Cube splitters are durable, easy to handle, and suitable for splitting beams carrying images or laser light .Plate and Mirror Beam SplittersPlate beam splitters consist of a thin, flat glass plate coated on one surface with a partially reflective material, often a thin layer of aluminum or other metals.
