The basic structure of fiber optic cables

The basic structure of fiber optic cables

A fiber optic cable consists of a core, cladding, coating, strengthening fibers, and an outer jacket, each serving a specific role in transmitting light signals and protecting the fiber.CoreThe core is the central part of the fiber optic cable that carries light signals. It is typically made of ultra-pure silica glass (SiO2), though some short-range fibers use plastic. The core's diameter varies depending on the fiber type: single-mode fibers usually have a 9-micron core, while multimode fibers range from 50 to 62.5 microns. Light travels through the core via total internal reflection, allowing data to be transmitted over long distances with minimal loss .CladdingSurrounding the core is the cladding, made of glass with a slightly lower refractive index than the core. This difference in refractive index ensures that light remains confined within the core, enabling efficient signal transmission. The cladding also provides a protective optical boundary and contributes to the fiber's mechanical stability .CoatingThe coating is a polymer layer applied over the cladding to protect the fiber from physical damage, moisture, and environmental stress. It prevents scratches and microbends that could degrade signal quality. During connectorization or splicing, the coating is stripped off to expose the cladding and core .Strengthening FibersFiber optic cables include strength members, often made of aramid yarn (like Kevlar), fiberglass, or steel, to provide tensile strength and prevent stretching or breaking during installation. These fibers help the cable withstand pulling forces, especially in outdoor or long-distance deployments .Outer JacketThe cable jacket is the outermost layer that shields the internal components from environmental hazards such as moisture, UV radiation, chemicals, and abrasion. Jackets are made from materials like PVC, polyethylene, or LSZH (low-smoke zero-halogen) depending on the installation environment .Additional Design ConsiderationsFiber optic cables can be constructed in tight-buffered or loose-tube designs. Tight-buffered cables have the fiber directly surrounded by a protective buffer, suitable for indoor use. Loose-tube cables house fibers in a gel-filled or dry tube, allowing movement and protection in outdoor or long-distance applications. Some cables also use ribbon fibers for mass fusion splicing in high-density networks . This combination of core, cladding, coating, strength members, and jacket ensures that fiber optic cables can transmit high-speed data reliably while being mechanically robust and environmentally resistant.
