Finland-branded OSFP optical modules OSFP

Finland-branded OSFP optical modules OSFP

OSFP (Octal Small Form Factor Pluggable) is a high-speed optical transceiver standard designed for 400G, 800G, and beyond, offering enhanced thermal management and scalability for dense data center and AI workloads.Overview of OSFPOSFP is an open, vendor-neutral standard defined by the OSFP Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) to support eight high-speed electrical lanes per module, each capable of 50G, 100G, or 200G PAM4 signaling, enabling total bandwidths of 400G, 800G, or 1.6T depending on configuration . Unlike QSFP-DD, OSFP prioritizes thermal headroom and electrical performance over port density, making it ideal for next-generation AI clusters and hyperscale data centers . The module measures 22mm in width, slightly larger than QSFP-DD, which improves heat dissipation and allows higher power operation up to 15–20W for standard modules and even higher for advanced models .Variants and Form FactorsOSFP modules come in several variants to address different deployment needs:Standard OSFP: Includes an integrated heatsink (open-top or closed-top) for improved thermal performance .OSFP-RHS (Riding Heatsink): Requires an external heatsink, offering flexibility in cooling solutions .OSFP-XD (Extended Density): Doubles the electrical lanes to 16, supporting up to 3.2T, but is not compatible with standard OSFP ports due to mechanical and electrical differences . Additionally, OSFP modules are available in finned-top and flat-top designs:Finned-Top: Features heat-dissipating fins for enhanced thermal management, suitable for high-density racks and restricted airflow environments .Flat-Top: Has a smooth surface, compatible with NICs or switches that cannot accommodate finned modules .ApplicationsOSFP modules are widely deployed in hyperscale data centers, cloud infrastructure, and AI/ML workloads, where high bandwidth, reliability, and efficient thermal management are critical . The open MSA ensures interoperability across vendors, allowing seamless integration into diverse networking environments .Key AdvantagesHigh Bandwidth: Supports 400G, 800G, and 1.6T links with 8 or 16 lanes.Thermal Efficiency: Integrated heatsinks and finned designs manage power dissipation effectively.Scalability: OSFP-XD and standard OSFP provide options for higher density or standard deployments.Vendor Interoperability: Open MSA framework ensures compatibility across multiple OEMs and transceiver vendors. OSFP is increasingly recognized as the preferred form factor for next-generation optical networking, particularly in environments where power, cooling, and high-speed performance are more critical than port density .
