Ceramic ferrule round heads are machined using a combination of precision molding, bore lapping, and sequential outer diameter grinding to achieve high concentricity and surface finish.Manufacturing and Machining Process1. Material Preparation and Molding Ceramic ferrules are typically made from zirconia or alumina ceramics. The raw powders are mixed with organic binders and preformed, then shaped using injection molding or extrusion molding. Injection molding involves high-pressure, low-speed injection to ensure compactness and minimize pores, while extrusion molding allows continuous concentric shaping of the ferrule blank . 2. Bore Formation and Lapping The central bore is formed using a fine wire during molding. Post-molding, the bore may exhibit slight bending due to core distortion. To correct this, a tensioned wire is passed through the bore while heating the ferrule, straightening the hole and improving roundness . Bore lapping is then performed to achieve precise inner diameter and smoothness, often minimizing or eliminating the need for extensive polishing. 3. Outer Diameter Machining The outer periphery of the ferrule is machined in multiple stages:Primary machining: A cylindrical grinder removes curved portions and tapers, establishing initial concentricity.Secondary machining: Conducted after bore lapping to align the outer diameter with the corrected bore.Tertiary and finish machining: Centerless grinders refine the surface, achieving final outer diameter accuracy, circularity, cylindricity, and surface roughness . 4.
