Installation of fiber optic cable and utility pole guy wire

Installation of fiber optic cable and utility pole guy wire

Aerial fiber optic installation involves securing cables to utility poles using support strands and guy wires to ensure stability, proper tension, and compliance with safety standards.Planning and PreparationBefore installation, a thorough site survey is essential to assess pole conditions, terrain, and potential obstacles such as trees or buildings. Permits from local authorities must be obtained, and coordination with traffic and utility agencies is required if existing poles are used . Poles must be “made ready” by the owner or authorized parties, which may include reinforcing or replacing existing structures .Cable Types and RequirementsTwo primary types of aerial fiber optic cables are used:All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS) cables: Can be installed near power lines without a messenger wire, suitable for long spans and extreme weather .Messenger-supported cables: Fiber is lashed to a steel or dielectric messenger strand, providing additional support and tension control . Cables must meet industry standards for tensile strength, temperature range, and bend radius. For example, ADSS cables may require tensile strength from 1,500N for short spans up to 12,000N for long spans, and a temperature range of -40°C to +80°C .Installation of Support Strands and Guy WiresSupport strands are installed first to secure the fiber cable and provide stability. This involves:Removing old strands if necessary and inspecting poles for structural integrity .Installing new support strands with proper tension and alignment.Anchoring strands at strategic locations to resist wind and environmental forces.Attaching guy wires to anchors to prevent sagging and maintain tension, especially in areas prone to high winds or heavy ice . Proper tensioning ensures sag is limited (typically
