Fiber optic sensor as a current sensor

Fiber optic sensor as a current sensor

Fiber optic current sensors measure electrical currents using light, offering high accuracy, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and safe non-contact operation.Working PrincipleFiber optic current sensors operate based on the Faraday effect, where a magnetic field generated by an electrical current causes a rotation in the polarization of light traveling through an optical fiber . The sensor typically consists of a single-ended optical fiber or a loop of fiber wrapped around the conductor. Changes in the light's polarization are detected and converted into a measurement of the current's magnitude and direction . Interferometric FOCS use circularly polarized light and measure phase shifts to achieve high sensitivity .Key ComponentsA typical FOCS includes:Optical Fiber: Transmits light and senses magnetic field-induced polarization changes .Light Source: Often a broadband or laser source to provide stable illumination .Polarizer and Quarter-Wave Plate: Control and analyze the polarization state of light .Photo Detector: Converts optical signals into electrical signals for measurement .Delay Coils and Mirrors: Enhance sensitivity and allow interferometric detection .AdvantagesFiber optic current sensors offer several benefits over traditional current measurement technologies:High Accuracy: Can measure uni- or bi-directional DC currents up to hundreds of kiloamperes with ±0.1% accuracy .Electromagnetic Immunity: Light-based measurement is unaffected by EMI, making FOCS ideal for high-voltage or noisy environments .Non-Contact Operation: The sensor does not need to touch the conductor, improving safety and reducing short-circuit risks .Galvanic Isolation: The glass fiber acts as an electrical insulator, allowing safe measurement in high-voltage systems .Compact and Lightweight: Easier installation compared to bulky Hall effect or oil-insulated transformers .Fast Response: Capable of rapid current detection, suitable for dynamic monitoring .ApplicationsFOCS are widely used in:High-Voltage Substations: For accurate current monitoring without interference .Power Grids and Industrial Systems: Where precision and reliability are critical .Harsh Environments: Including areas with strong electromagnetic fields or high voltages .Research and Specialized Equipment: For measuring extremely high currents safely .ConsiderationsWhile FOCS are highly effective, they are sensitive to acoustic perturbations and mechanical stress in the fiber, which can affect measurement accuracy . Specialized fibers, such as Spun HiBi or Spun LoBi, are used to minimize birefringence and improve performance . Overall, fiber optic current sensors provide a safe, precise, and interference-resistant solution for modern current measurement needs in both industrial and research applications.
