Busbar Materials for Switchgear

Busbar Materials for Switchgear

Switchgear busbars are typically made of high-conductivity copper or aluminum, chosen for their electrical and mechanical properties.Common MaterialsCopper is the most widely used material for busbars in switchgear due to its high electrical conductivity (about 100% IACS), excellent mechanical strength, and good corrosion resistance. It allows for compact layouts and stable joints, making it ideal for high-current applications and where space is limited. ETP (Electrolytic Tough Pitch) copper is commonly used, with harder tempers selected when additional mechanical strength is required . Aluminum is also used, especially in applications where weight reduction, cost savings, or longer conductor lengths are important. Aluminum has lower conductivity (around 61% IACS) compared to copper, so it usually requires a larger cross-section to carry the same current. Aluminum busbars demand careful joint design to prevent issues with oxide formation and long-term reliability .Forms and Surface TreatmentsBusbars can be solid, flat, tubular, or laminated, with flat and hollow shapes often used to improve heat dissipation and reduce the effects of AC skin effect at higher currents . Surface treatments such as tin plating or silver plating are applied to improve contact reliability, reduce oxidation, and lower contact resistance at connection points .Selection ConsiderationsThe choice between copper and aluminum depends on factors such as:Current-carrying capacityMechanical strength and stiffnessThermal performance and heat dissipationCorrosion resistancePanel size and weight constraintsCost and availability In summary, high-conductivity copper remains the default choice for most switchgear busbars, while aluminum is selected for specific applications where weight or cost is a priority .
