This design makes CWDM cost-effective and simpler, suitable for short-range communications such as metropolitan area networks (MANs) or campus networks . CWDM transceivers are less sophisticated, and the system can support up to 8–18 channels per fiber, depending on the implementation . Its advantages include lower cost, simpler optics, and reduced power consumption, but it is limited in spectral efficiency and maximum distance.Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexers (DWDM)DWDM systems provide higher channel density with tighter wavelength spacing, typically 0.8 nm (100 GHz) or 0.4 nm (50 GHz), operating mainly in the C-band (1530–1565 nm) and optionally the L-band (1565–1625 nm), . DWDM can accommodate 40 or more channels per fiber, making it ideal for long-haul and high-capacity networks, such as those used by internet service providers and telecom operators . DWDM systems often require optical amplification and dispersion compensation to maintain signal integrity over distances up to 100 km or more .
