Laying flat iron along the cable tray

Laying flat iron along the cable tray

Flat iron (MS angles) can be used as support structures along cable trays, installed at regular intervals and securely fastened to ensure stability and safe cable management.Purpose of Flat Iron SupportsFlat iron, typically mild steel (MS) angles, is used to fabricate support structures for cable trays. These supports provide a stable base for cable trays, ensuring they can carry the weight of cables and withstand forces generated during operation, including short-circuit events or environmental loads like wind and ice . They are not intended for walking or as ladders, but solely for supporting cables .Installation GuidelinesFabrication and Placement: MS angles (e.g., 50 x 50 mm, 6 mm thick) are fabricated to match the cable tray layout. Supports are usually mounted on walls or existing metal structures at intervals of approximately 1 meter . For longer spans, bridge structures using C-channels or additional angles may be welded to existing supports to maintain rigidity .Fastening: Supports should be securely fastened using high-strength bolts (e.g., M8 or Hilti make) to walls or structural members. Proper washers and nuts are used to ensure a stable connection . Welding may be applied where necessary, followed by primer and enamel coating to prevent corrosion .Isolation and Protection: To prevent electrical conduction or damage to cables, isolation materials such as G-10 sheets or FRP pieces can be placed between the flat iron support and the cable tray . This ensures electrical safety and reduces wear on cable insulation.Alignment and Leveling: Supports should be aligned horizontally and vertically to maintain a level cable tray. Timber or temporary supports can be used during installation to hold the flat iron in position . Proper leveling ensures even load distribution and prevents sagging of the cable tray.Integration with Cable Tray: Once the flat iron supports are installed, the cable tray (perforated, ladder, or trough type) is mounted on top. Coupler plates and high-tensile bolts are used to join tray sections securely . The tray type should be chosen based on cable type, ventilation, and load requirements .Additional ConsiderationsSpacing: Standard support spacing is typically 1 meter, but may vary depending on tray type, cable weight, and environmental conditions .Corrosion Protection: Surface treatments such as galvanization, powder coating, or enamel painting are recommended to prevent rust and extend the lifespan of the support structure .Safety Compliance: Installation should follow relevant standards such as BS EN 61537 for cable trays and BS 6946 for channel supports . Only competent personnel familiar with electrical installation practices should perform the work . By following these guidelines, flat iron supports can provide a durable, safe, and compliant foundation for cable trays, ensuring proper cable management and long-term reliability.
