How to measure fiber optic couplers

Fiber optic couplers are measured by evaluating insertion loss, return loss, excess loss, polarization-dependent loss, and directivity using optical power meters, light sources, and OTDRs.Key Parameters to MeasureInsertion Loss (IL): This measures the signal loss when light passes through the coupler. It is determined by comparing the input power to the total output power using a stable light source and an optical power meter. The difference indicates the insertion loss in decibels (dB) and reflects the efficiency of the coupler . Excess Loss: This is the additional loss beyond the theoretical splitting loss. For example, a 1x2 coupler ideally splits light with 3 dB loss per output, but manufacturing imperfections add excess loss. It is calculated as the difference between measured output power and the expected split power . Return Loss (RL): Return loss quantifies the amount of light reflected back toward the source due to imperfections or mismatches. High return loss indicates minimal reflection and better performance. It can be measured using an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) or an optical spectrum analyzer (OSA), . Polarization-Dependent Loss (PDL): PDL measures the variation in transmission due to different polarization states of light. It is calculated as the ratio of maximum to minimum transmitted power across all polarization states, expressed in dB . Directivity: Directivity refers to the fraction of input light lost in the internally terminated port of the coupler. It is important for 2x2 couplers and can be measured by injecting light into one port and measuring leakage to the terminated port .Measurement ProcedureVisual Inspection: Before testing, inspect the coupler and connectors for scratches, dirt, or misalignment using a fiber inspection microscope or video probe .Setup: Connect a stable light source to the input port of the coupler. Connect optical power meters to the output ports to measure transmitted power .Measure Insertion and Excess Loss: Record the input power and the sum of output powers. Calculate insertion loss and excess loss using the measured values .Measure Return Loss: Use an OTDR or OSA to detect reflected light and calculate return loss .Evaluate PDL and Directivity: Rotate the polarization of the input light to determine PDL. Measure light leakage to terminated ports to assess directivity .Repeatability Check: Perform multiple measurements to ensure consistency and reliability of results .Additional ConsiderationsEnsure the fiber cores are properly aligned and connectors are clean to minimize measurement errors .Use fibers with appropriate numerical aperture (NA) to match the coupler specifications for accurate light capture .Document all measurements and compare them to manufacturer specifications to verify coupler quality and performance .
