Principles and methods of fiber optic sensor inspection of items

Fiber optic sensors detect and inspect items by transmitting light through optical fibers and analyzing changes in the returned light caused by the presence, position, or properties of the object.Principles of Fiber Optic SensorsFiber optic sensors operate by exploiting the physical properties of light, such as intensity, wavelength, phase, or polarization, transmitted through optical fibers made of glass or plastic . The basic components include:Fiber-optic amplifier: Contains the light source (usually an LED or laser), a photodetector, and signal processing electronics .Fiber-optic cables: Transmit light to and from the sensing region; they can be single-mode or multimode depending on the application .Sensor head: Can be intrinsic (light interacts directly with the fiber) or extrinsic (light interacts with an external optical element), . The sensor measures changes in light caused by the object or environment, such as reflection, absorption, or scattering, and converts these changes into electrical signals for analysis .Methods of Inspection1. Through-Beam MethodThe emitter and receiver are placed on opposite sides of the object. The object interrupts the light beam, and the sensor detects the change in intensity . This method is highly sensitive and suitable for detecting small or transparent objects.2. Reflective (Retro-Reflective) MethodLight is emitted from the fiber, reflects off the object, and returns to the sensor. The sensor measures the intensity of the reflected light to determine the presence, distance, or surface characteristics of the object .3. Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) SensorsFBG sensors use periodic variations in the fiber's refractive index to reflect specific wavelengths. Changes in strain, temperature, or pressure alter the reflected wavelength, allowing precise measurement of physical parameters .4. Interferometric MethodsThese methods measure phase changes in light caused by variations in the optical path length. They are highly sensitive and used for detecting minute displacements, vibrations, or refractive index changes .5. Distributed SensingIn distributed fiber optic sensors, the entire fiber acts as a sensing medium. Techniques like Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR) allow monitoring of temperature, strain, or vibrations along kilometers of fiber .Advantages in InspectionNon-contact sensing: Reduces risk of damage to delicate items .High sensitivity and precision: Capable of detecting very small objects or subtle changes in physical parameters .Environmental robustness: Resistant to high temperatures, humidity, vibration, and electromagnetic interference .Flexibility: Can be installed in confined or hazardous spaces where conventional sensors cannot operate .ApplicationsFiber optic sensors are widely used in industrial automation, structural health monitoring, biomedical devices, and environmental sensing. They can inspect objects for presence, position, strain, temperature, or surface quality, and are particularly valuable in harsh or remote environments . In summary, fiber optic sensor inspection relies on light transmission and analysis, with multiple methods—through-beam, reflective, Bragg gratings, interferometry, and distributed sensing—allowing versatile, precise, and non-invasive monitoring of items in diverse applications.
