Using a cable tray directly underground is not standard practice because trays do not provide adequate protection against soil pressure, moisture, or potential physical damage. Burial Depth: According to NEC 300.5, the minimum burial depth depends on the location and type of conduit. For areas where vehicles may drive over the trench, a minimum depth of 24 inches is required. For residential driveways or outdoor areas, 18 inches is acceptable, and 12 inches is allowed only if the circuit is GFCI-protected . Direct-buried low-voltage cables should also be placed on a sand bed and covered with protective layers such as concrete tiles in high-traffic areas .
